In 1999, ARCA began offering literacy instruction to people with barriers to traditional learning. In July of 2005, ARCA’s Literacy Project increased its focus on using computers in response to student interest. Computer instruction and literacy skills have now become more fundamentally connected in each lesson. For example, students may read and discuss a book while practicing skills such as phonics and comprehension. They then can continue to research the topic of the book by conducting an internet search.

All students can participate in computer-based learning. Student skills range from learning to use a mouse to independent research projects, and all students are encouraged to learn at their own pace.

Now that more classes are offered in small group settings, ARCA can reach a larger and more diverse group of adult students. Click here for information on current classes and registration. Check our haiku link for great poetry written by literacy students.
